By almost any measure, Jesse Goff is a very successful photographer. The San Francisco-based commercial photographer has photographed former President Jimmy Carter, musician Carlos Santana and even former Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev.
However, like most services-based businesses, his revenue is dependent largely on the success or failure of his clients. When they are doing well, he does well. When they aren’t, he isn’t.
Goff acted quickly and, working with his wife Marie, a search engine optimization (SEO) expert, created a series of online printing businesses that made use of printers he had sitting idle around his photography studio most of the time.
In this interview, I ask Jesse about how he came about to create these side businesses. If you are a services-based business, you’ll love this interview. We cover:
- how to make use of equipment you already have in your business which is not being used to its maximum potential
- how to differentiate yourself in a crowded marketplace
- why Jesse decided to self-fund a series of iconic images, and what they have done for his business
