Stop Going to Conferences. Do This Instead.

stop-going-to-conferences-blog

Warning: I’m going on a rant here.

There are too many rah-rah conferences for entrepreneurs.

You know what I’m talking about. 2 or 3 days of drinking from a firehose with non-stop speakers back-to-back, spewing too many ideas.

Speaker after speaker telling you how you just need to “hustle more” and wake up early, and if you’re already waking up early, you need to wake up even earlier.

And if you are already waking up earlier, you need to just work straight through the night.

Because sleep is for the weak.

And you need to pass out more business cards and you need to be on every social media channel and you need to master Facebook ads and don’t forget Instagram.

And Pinterest. And Vine.

Strike that. Twitter just killed Vine.

But you need to be on whatever comes next.

So you fill yourself up with too many ideas, get inspired and excited for 24 or 48 hours like a sugar rush, and then…  nothing.

You go home, and you’re not sure what to do next.

You have no clear plan.

No one holds you accountable.

Thousands of dollars down the drain.

It’s like gorging yourself on all-you-can-eat buffet but the rest of the year you’re still hungry.

Do these events REALLY move the needle in your business?

I see a lot of people spend THOUSANDS of dollars flying around the country going to event after event, while their business limps along.

People go to these conferences because it “feels like” they’re making progress on their business, but if you really look at whether there’s ROI or if you made serious changes and improvements to your business, it’s questionable.  [Read more…]

From $100 to $30,000 in 9 Months: My Review of Zero to Launch [with video]

Ramit Sethi - Zero to Launch logoNOTE: Don’t miss the special bonus I am offering at the bottom of this post.  Also, be sure to grab your spot in Ramit’s free “crash course” Launch Your Profitable Online Business: How to Find a Profitable Business Idea in 7 Days while it is still available free.

Imagine for a moment that it is Friday night.

It’s been a long, tough week.

You’ve just opened a bottle of wine with your wife or husband or girlfriend or boyfriend.

After taking a sip of your wine, you put down the glass and pick up your phone.

There, in your email, are two receipts for payments of $500 from two complete strangers.

It’s not a mistake. And it’s not a dream. You’ve just been paid while you’re having a glass of wine.

Incredibly, I’ve had this experience over the past few months. Even more more amazingly, it actually has become increasingly commonplace.  And… I can’t believe I just said that.

If you want to know how this became possible, I give a large amount of credit to Zero to Launch (affiliate link), a training program on how to create an online business.

In this post, I want to give you my complete review of Zero to Launch, including a video of what it looks like when you log in.

I also want to give you five reasons why I would recommend you sign up for the program if you are serious about growing your reputation and your business online.  I also have a special offer at the bottom of this post to make signing up for Zero to Launch even more attractive.

Now, what does this have to do with building relationships in business? On this blog, I write about how to use the new world of digital tools to build relationships, grow your revenue and advance your career.

Zero to Launch has helped me dramatically in that mission. And if you invest in it, I am convinced the program can help you to build your own profitable online business by building more relationships faster with more people, just like I have.

How to find friends who won’t let you fail [video]

15331925331_e333e17a34_zNote: read to the end for a special bonus I am offering through Oct 31st.

It was my birthday this week, and I woke up on my birthday to a nice present: someone I had never met had sent me $500.

Now, that might seem kind of strange.

But it wasn’t some accident. And it wasn’t luck. The $500 was in payment for a digital course I had created.

I don’t tell this story to brag — that’s not the point. I mention it because about two years ago, I looked at my business and I decided I wanted to make some changes. Here’s the never-before-told story of how that happened.

20+ Great Books for Entrepreneurs and Small Business Owners

If we encounter a man of rare intellect, we should ask him what books he reads.

–Ralph Waldo Emerson

Screen shot 2014-02-08 at 12.39.10 AMI have a confession to make: I love reading great books.

For quite some time, I have kept a Google Document with an ongoing list of all the books I read. I realized this list could be helpful to others, so I decided to post a list of the best books I’ve read here.

As you will see below, these books are primarily non-fiction business books.

I’m going to be updating this list over time, so please feel free to add your own suggestions in the comments at the bottom.  I’d love to hear what books you’ve read and loved.

(Most of the links below are referral links, meaning if you click through and buy a copy, I will receive a small commission. If you do purchase using my link, thank you!)

What books do you recommend? Please add your suggestions below.

11 Things I Learned in 2 Years of Being an Entrepreneur

entrepreneurToday is my son Mason’s 3rd birthday.  Of course, today brings back a flood of memories not just from Mason’s birth, but from exactly a year later, when I decided to quit my job and become an entrepreneur.

Looking back now, I didn’t have a great plan, but I knew I would figure out a lot as I went along.  That was both a good and a bad plan (as I’ll explain in a moment).

Since then, I’ve had many ups and downs and I’ve learned a lot.

Although I had done a fair amount of advance planning, there were many lessons I learned that you can’t absorb from books or endless research. Some of these lessons will only come from doing it for yourself.

So if you are an entrepreneur or you’re thinking about becoming one, I have some advice for you.

Here are 11 things I have learned in the past two years of being an entrepreneur:

1.  Provide 100% Kick-Ass Service to your Customers
