How to Overcome ‘Victim Mindset’

Ever feel like nothing is going your way?

You know…

You got food on your pants.

That Big Client you wanted to work for won’t return your emails.

Your spouse is pissed at you (again).

Your clients are all upset – for one reason or another.

And you’re kicking yourself for not buying Bitcoin when it was 5 bucks.

We’ve all been there.

But… if you ever find yourself dwelling on the negative, over and over again….

Or you find you are spending a lot of time focusing on forces that are conspiring against you (like people who make you made) rather than appreciating the good which is all around you….

Well, I call this “victim mindset.”

What is Victim Mindset?

It’s a mental state where you focus on being a victim of the negative actions of others, often in spite of evidence of other positive circumstances.

A LOT of people struggle with this.

And it’s a major problem because when you dwell on negativity, it is hard to generate the energy and focus to produce positive results in your life (tweet this).

In other words, why fight for justice when the world is conspiring against you, or when the system is rigged?

Sometimes we even see politicians who have this victim mindset, focusing only on negative forces (real or perceived).

I’ve found in recent years that one of the best things you can do to improve your circumstances and grow your business is to overcome victim mindset.

So how do you overcome a victim mindset?

1 – Practice Gratitude Daily

I try to practice gratitude daily, because when you focus on the things you are appreciative of, it improves your mental well-being and leads to greater happiness.

Here’s how you do it. First, keep it very simple. Each morning, write down 3 things you are grateful for. It should take no more than 30 seconds.

I do this on the paper planners I created for myself and fill out each day. You can also check out the awesome 5 Minute Journal (referral link) if you want a daily journal to keep you focused on writing out your gratitude items.

2 – Let Go of Your Bitterness

When you suffer from Victim Mindset, then you become bitter and resentful at the world around you.

There’s a saying about resentment. “Anger, resentment and jealousy doesn’t change the heart of others– it only changes yours.”

What that means is that you are only harming yourself by being resentful. So you need to let go.

Fortunately, there does not need to be a big climactic and emotional apology to anyone, like an ABC Reality TV show.

You can release your resentment now. Today. This hour. Just let it go.

Remember: the resentment you harbor towards any one person, group of people, or organization is only hurting YOU. So releasing it is doing yourself a favor.

3 – Begin Anew

The new year is a time for starting new practices and new habits, which reinforce a practice focused on gratitude and turning away from resentment and bitterness.

Wow, does that ever sound “woo woo.” I guess I’ve been living in San Francisco for too long. But it’s true.

So take the time now to start new practices. Maybe it’s writing down the 3 things you are grateful for each morning right after you get to the office.

Or maybe it’s listening for when you marinate in anger on a person or groups of people.  

Or maybe it’s joining a new community of people who embrace gratitude in their lives and who will encourage and support you as you move away from anger and resentment.
